The course is organised around a weekly one-hour lecture and small-group seminars. The lectures give students an understanding of the key ideas relating to each topic, and the seminars focus on practical tasks around managing the polling project. Students gain understanding and hands-on experience of writing survey questions, building a sample of young people, and analysing and publicising poll results for public and academic audiences.

The John Smith Youth Poll Project is run by Joe Greenwood-Hau, who has worked in political polling, taught survey research methods and quantitative analysis, and conducted research using surveys, focus groups and interviews.
His aim is to enable students to shape narratives around young people and politics in the UK, and ensure that they gain a working understanding of how to run a polling project and conduct survey research.
