Part of the University of Glasgow’s Curriculum for Life programme, the course is organised around a weekly one-hour guest speaker and Q&A session, and two-hour small-group seminars. The guest speakers offer insights into their work and how it relates to politics before answering students’ questions. The seminars focus on the skills needed to campaign for change and engage with politics. Through simulations and practical tasks, students gain understanding and hands-on experience of creating campaigns, negotiating across divides, and communicating with diverse audiences.

Not just politics as usual is run by Joe Greenwood-Hau and Eddie Barnes. Joe has worked in political polling and campaigning, taught courses on political behaviour, and conducted research about varied forms of political (non-)participation. Eddie is the Director of the John Smith Centre and has extensive experience of working in journalism and political communication and campaigning.
They are both excited to run such an innovative and practical course. They aim to enable students to overcome the barriers to participation and making change that they sometimes face. This is part of the John Smith Centre’s wider mission to open politics and civic life to young people, especially those from marginalised groups, so that their voices are heard regardless of background.
