The John Smith Centre is delighted to be working alongside the John and Pat Hume Foundation, The Consulate General of Ireland in Edinburgh – Consul Jerry O’Donovan and Paul O’Kane MSP to host a special event at the University of Glasgow to mark 25 years since the signing of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
This event builds on partnership working between the John Smith Centre and the John and Pat Hume Foundation and by the Irish Consulate and MSPs across the Scottish Parliament. It will provide an opportunity to reflect, discuss and consider the path to the historic peace in Northern Ireland – particularly how politicians and communities came together to find common ground even in the most difficult circumstances and to consider the current challenges for the Agreement.
Featuring:
• Mark Durkan – Former SDLP Leader and Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland
• Mike Nesbitt MLA – Former Leader of the Ulster Unionist Party and current MLA for Strangford
• Professor Monica McWilliams – Academic, peace activist, human rights defender, former MLA and founder of the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition
The event will take place on Wednesday 14 June 2023 from 6pm to 8pm at the Glasgow University Union Dining Hall, 32 University Avenue, Glasgow G12 8LX
