A recent debate over just how “family-friendly” Scottish politics actually is broke out after the SNP MSP Gail Ross announced her plans to stand down from Parliament with the full intention of spending more time with her young son. She declared that it was impossible to be both a good mum and a good politician covering the largest land mass constituency in the country.

The journalist and broadcaster Alex Massie took to Twitter to warn against an over-reaction. He joins our Centre Director Kezia Dugdale in conversation and in the vain hope of finding a balance between a representative parliament and effective scrutiny.
