During the first Cabinet Office Conversation in 2024, Dr Laura Gilbert impressed students and staff with her deep insight into data, politics and how to use the former to inform the latter.

In this first session of 2024, Dr Gilbert started by retracing her career and how she came to be Chief Analyst and Director of Data Science at 10 Downing Street. Her inspiring path included a variety of exciting opportunities as well as daunting challenges. She continued diving deeper into her current role and shedding light on how data informs current political processes, specifically in 10 Downing Street. The event series Cabinet Office Conversations is organised by the University’s Career service and chaired by our Centre Director Prof Kezia Dugdale.

“My passion is to
use AI to make society better.”
Dr Laura Gilbert
Chief Analyst and Director of
Data Science at 10 Downing Street

Dr Gilbert spoke passionately  about AI and the positive uses it can have to inform and shape public policy. While it has numerous and varied applications and can help create more efficient work flows, the risks of AI cannot be neglected and need to be carefully considered in every instance.

The conversation was followed by a lively Q&A session during which students asked insightful and critical questions.
